How to use a compatibility comparison

A pair page is a screening tool, not a promise that two fish will coexist. StockingLab compares the two profiles across shared temperature and pH, adult size, broad temperament, selected behavioural flags and swim-zone use. The result is most useful for identifying a reason to investigate further before purchase.

What the pair pages do not know

Individual temperament, sex, breeding condition, previous social experience, aquascape and the rest of the community can all change an outcome. A pairing that is reasonable in a long, heavily structured aquarium may fail in a short bare tank. Likewise, two peaceful fish can still be a poor match if one needs cooler water or if one species is too large for the available footprint.

Check the whole community

Pairwise compatibility is only one layer. Three individually acceptable pairings can still create a crowded community when every species occupies the same swim zone or when several proper social groups are added together. Use the full planner with actual tank dimensions, filter flow, maturity and quantities so those combined pressures are visible.

Interpreting the verdict

  • Good: no major conflict was identified in the current data. Continue with species-specific research.
  • Caution: at least one condition deserves closer attention, such as size, behaviour or a narrow water overlap.
  • High risk: the model has identified a more serious incompatibility signal that should be resolved before stocking.

The strongest planning decision is one that still makes sense after you have checked dedicated care information for both species and tested the complete aquarium rather than relying on a single pair score.
